Special Kids

Yesterday I attended a Christmas Party and Graduation ceremony for the Kamadine Day Care Centre, which looks after a group of young HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children from the Kazungula area. Eleven of the little students were being sent off in style to Big School - they will be starting Standard 1 at Kazungula Primary School in 2009. Here are two of them, with big smiles all over their glitter-adorned faces! It is always a joy to be with them. As I arrived, a bit early by Kasane standards, the kids were playing outside and they just rushed along from the playground for big hugs (at knee level!), or just to hold my hand, or gently touch my arm... I took hundreds of photos, and had some interesting moments sitting on the floor at child level, trying to get a few decent pics of my diminutive moving targets!

These little ones just always touch my heart,  but it was really a joyful, happy occasion with the kids and teachers dancing together, and a pillow-fattened, festive Father Christmas handing out gifts...Just being with these children always  reminds me to count my myriad blessings...

  2. Thank you for tagging me, Karen! Yes, I also have so much to be thankful for, and the marvellous internet is surely one of the things! How else could we all have got in contact and share our thoughts?! I loved the pics of your little children. Val had told me of that Day Care Center before and what great work it does. Glad you are involved! Have a happy Thanksgiving Day!

Val, how about next year? coincide with one of your flying visits to kasane, you will love it!

Angela, just wondering...perhaps you are one of the people Sharon asked me to email pics to from last year's Christmas party??

Lori, loved your sparkly cheerful images, and well done for making us all count our blessings...

  9. It's a wonderful list of gratitude, Karen, and I'll definitely do it.

Aren't those kids just so amazing - it really does touch one's heart, doesn't it - makes one feel ever so humble and grateful for all that one has. I love the "indomitability" of the human spirit.

    Wonderful post!

  10. Val & Angela, will send you some more info and pics. I'm sure Sharon will be delighted!

Anil & Vanilla ... yes, they are very inspiring somehow. just very special little ones, and yes, there is a great sense of optimism and that indomitable human spirit! This also goes for those who worked so hard to get this project going, against very frustrating odds!

These are the luckier children who are getting some care and stimulation and some nutritious food during their day.. there are so many worse off, too. Heartbreaking.

There are other projects for vulnerable kids round here..I will do some more research, and write about them too...
